I rode western when I was a child but since owning my own horse I ride english. After getting used to the saddle, I don't think it's that much different. If I wasn't interested in jumping, I would just take basic balenced seat riding lessons. I would show in English Equitation and English Pleasure classes. I would go with the all purpose saddle. English saddles are measured differently then western saddles which makes the measurement higher. I ride in a 15" western and a 17" English. If that helps any. If you go to bigger shows and you show in the Hunter division it usually has a jumping class so if you've not jumping then your not doing all the classes in your division, if that makes any sense at all. Just starting out, I would take basic english riding lessons learn how to post and get your horse moving off your leg then decide where you want to go with it.
