I have done the same thing only cause my niece wants me to show Dressage with her. I know what your fears are but I am taking center balance riding lessons with the dressage training. That helps alot as you going from a large comfortable saddle to saddle that makes you feel like you are bareback. To add to the fears I am doing this on a 18hh belgian draft so the center balance lessons have given me the confidence to ride with that saddle. My big guy loves to stop on a dime and give a nickel change when you are cantering, trotting or just walking. I think he does that to get rise out of me and with the center riding lessons I don't get thrown forward when he does this. This has been my experience and others may have different opinions and experiences. To be honest I miss my horn...western is my cup of tea.
