If it's just weight you want to put on your horse, your best bet is to add oil. And, the cheapest is probably either corn or vegetable oil. Adding protein doesn't really put the weight on a horse. Fat is 2.25 times more energy dense than protein or carbohydrates, and what isn't needed for energy is stored in the body as body fat. A level of 6-10% fat in a horse's diet will give beneficial results. You might want to do a bit of experimenting to see how much you can safely give your horse. Start w/just a little, like 1/4 cup, and gradually add. If your horse starts to develop diaherra, cut back!

Not only that, but too much protein can cause health problems for a horse. A horse only needs 8% protein at a maintenance level. Of course, if your horse is being used quite heavily, you'd need to be sure they're getting a higher protein level.
