My husband and I have our own barn with just our horses. We had our barn before we had children. Our children are now 8 and 2 1/2 yrs. old. It is a lot of work - mucking stalls, fixing fences, mowing paddocks, cleaning water buckets and water troughs, getting hay etc. and with your kids' needs it tends to leave little time or energy to ride. Also, if you want to take vacations you need to find reliable help to care for your horses while your away. Even if you are going out for a day trip you have to be back in time to care for your horses. It is a big commitment. On the plus side - overall it is cheaper to keep your horses at home. You know exactly how well your horses are taken care of. You can ride anytime without having to drive to the barn. Just my opinion but I would buy a horse first and board it out for awhile before building my own barn especially if you really enjoy spending quiet riding time with your horse.
