make sure you have done the full deworming - with a lavicidal worming included- and tapeworm -equimax for tapes and the larvacidal is the five day power pac- then have the teeth done - if you havent already- these two things will not only help the horse gain weight and save you money on feed- they save alot of money if the horse colics or chokes..

then you can either add some form of fat- oil or rice bran etc etc- and improve the hay quality -its well worth the extra dollar or two a bale if you compare it to the grain prices, also if you are feeding a senior or complete feed- you need to use the directions on the bag because it requires MORE pounds per day than regular pelleted feed. Most of the time increased hay and quaility of hay are enough if the horse has been wormed correctly and teeth have been done - and gets free choice hay. If the horse came from a sandy area-you might want to check into sand /physilliam fiber treatment.. but its a waste of money if you havent first addressed the worm/dental issues. Sugar is not what you want to add weight on a horse, you want to avoid it- with beet pulp you need to give it in dry weight- not soaked weight- so four or five pounds of beet pulp is alof of volume - over a five gallon bucket once soaked- so you can add beet pulp but if its not enough it wont do anything anyway .Your money would be better spent on something like Ultimate finish from Buckeye- hight fat supp with flaxseed etc--- you use one to three pounds a day and it adds fat and vitamins.. Triple crown sr and complete are both good feeds- but you still have to feed enough of it to add weight , rather then maintain weight- on a good sized horse you would need around eight to ten pounds a day at least to put weight on .
