I don't blame lack of slaughter facilities
Posted by: hawkhillequestrian Date posted: 03/20/2008 10:31:14 PM
However I do find it interesting that those who breed, truck, train and have a financial interest in more horses every year are typically those most opposed to the ban of horses slaughter for human consumption. Please don't forget the slaughter of horses still goes on in the USA but not for human consumption. The price per pound took a sky dive but boo hoo to those that made a living having slaughter as their easy way out.
I blame 6.00 a bale hay prices, 18.00 for a bag of feed, 6.50 shaving prices, cost of gas, lack of free time & diminishing places to ride on the price drop more then lack of slaughter plants. Many people just don't have the disposable 5-10,000 per year to keep a horse in NJ. If the high end barns are full and high end horses selling, it boils down to the average Joe having to decide between heating their home and having a horse.
