European Horse Slaughter.
Posted by: Stb4ever Date posted: 01/13/2008 09:12:35 PM
I lived in Europe (Sweden)for twenty nine (29) years and yes I eat met. I'm sure I have also eaten the occational horse even though I would not go to the market and buy a piece of horse steak.
I have been around horses my whole life both proffessionally and for pleasure, and I just want to educate people about the horse slaughter situation overe there, since it seems like there is all kinds of horror stories going around.
There are no longer slaughter houses taking in live horses to kill. The buildings have to be completely seperated for cows, pigs, sheep or horses. The can not be killed in the same place. And since horses are the smaller part of the slaughter business, they came up with a different solution.
Ambulatory trucks drive out to the farms or racetracks or wherever needed and the horse gets taken care of right on the spot.
You lead your horse out of the stall, the designated (and very qualified person) takes a minute to stand there and talk to you and your horse. The horse gets petted in the face a few times and it suspects nothing. A small metal tube is held to the forhead and the horse gets shot with a bolt. Instant death and life is over. The "butcher" then opens their throat with a small insition at lets the blood drain.
And then he loads the dead horse in the back of his truck.
You can choose and get paid $0.25-$0.50 per pound of meat or ask to get your horse destroyed wich you will get billed for.
I do not see anything in-humane with this.
As a matter of fact, I have seen racehorses break down on the track that they tried to euthanize and they have been staggering along for a while before going down. A horses natural instinct is to stay on its feet.
I know Sweden is a small country compared to the USA and the horse population is less but maybe this is something every state should deal with.
I know some people are against eating horses since it is a domesticated animal but dont eat it then.
I grew up around cows and I love them, but I still eat them....
And does anyone KNOW what goes on in a beef or pig slaughterhouse????
I think you will be as equally upset if you knew.
And is all domestic animals treated with respect?
Not really. Have you ever watched Animal Cops on Animal Planet you know. Dogs and cats are starved and abused everyday in this country.
Banning horse slaughter is not the solution for this country. It is how we deal with it and make it work for the sake of the horses and their owners.
